The 2nd Indochina War came hotly on the heels of the 1st Indochina War. This  involved South Vietnam and North Vietnam supported by their allies. South Vietnam was supported by anti-communists including the Philippines and US.  The North was assisted by China, the Soviet Union and other communist countries. The National Liberation Front (NLF) or Viet Cong, a South Vietnamese militia waged guerrilla war against anti-communist forces in the region aided by the North.

South Vietnam

The United States government got involved in the war as part of it broader policy to stop the Communists from getting a firm foothold in South Vietnam. On the other hand, the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese government were fighting to reunify Vietnam under the rule of the Communists. American military build up began in the 1950s as American military advisors set up camp in what was then French Indochina. By the early 60s, the US involvement increased especially after a US warship was attacked by North Vietnamese forces.

History Of The Vietnam War and the Marine Corps

The Marine Corps, a branch of the United States Armed Forces, played a critical role in the war. They took part in major battles such as Hue City, Khe Sanh and Cong Thien. The Marine Corps were also highly involved in guerrilla warfare against the Viet Cong militia. In addition they worked as military advisors to the Republic of Vietnam Marine Corps.

By 1968, the Vietnam War had peaked as US forces attacked targets across international borders in areas such as Cambodia and Laos. Later in the year, the North supported by communist allies launched the Tet Offensive. This was aimed overthrowing the South Vietnam government. Though the Tet Offensive failed it got American citizens enraged enough to the point of demanding withdrawal of American forces from Vietnam.

The US Marine Corps withdrew in 1971 but returned briefly in 1975 to evacuate Saigon and attempt rescue of the Mayaguez crew. By 15th August, 1973, direct US involvement in Vietnam ended. In spite of signing a Peace Accord, the South and North continued fighting until Saigon fell to the North Vietnamese Army in April 1975. This ended the Vietnam War.
