United States Military – A Cursory Analysis Since 1775. The United States military or Armed Forces date its origin back to 1775. This was when the Continental Army, Continental Navy and Continental Marines were established successively. This was in a bid to protect the US against the British Empire and the famous American Revolutionary War. These forces were in operation until 1784 when they were demobilized after the US signed the Treaty of Paris.  This eventually ended the war for independence.

Five United States Military Branches

united states militaryThe current US military is composed of five branches; the US Army, US Navy, US Air Force, US Marine Corps and the US Coast Guard. The President of the US is the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces.

The Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force both report to the Department of Defense (DoD).  The Coast Guard has its jurisdiction under the Department of Homeland Security, but to the DoD during times of war. The military has three categories of active duty, Reserve and National Guard officers.

The US Army was the first branch to be founded in 1775 and is one of the most powerful forces in the world. They are charged with defending the US lands and at times sea and air. Since its inception, it has been involved in a number of high profile wars like the World War.

They also safeguards installations and properties of the US in other countries. The Army Reserve and National Guard are trained just like the active duty soldiers but stay at home until their deployment or when needed. They work part-time in the forces.

The US Navy and Marine Corps were founded after the Army but were only developed during the Quasi War, the 1812 War and wars that were rising with France and Britain. The Navy defends the oceans and seas and secures them for safe trade and travel through the years. The United States Military is one of the most feared militaries in the world today.
